Identity Crisis of Jewish Writers
Lee Byung-Wook

Abstract
It is regretful that the great writers like Shakespeare and Goethe were not products of the Jewish culture, but if we fully understand that the Jewish people were locked in the ghetto for a long time and then completely liberated from the imprisonment of concentration camps with the end of the 2nd World War, it is a natural result. But the Jewish people began to cut a conspicuous figure in various fields in the 20th century, and many Jewish writers especially have been actively engaged in creative work. The self-sufficing and peaceful mind can not be delivered of artistic creativity. This paper studies many world famous Jewish writers including Heine, Heyse, Doeblin, Schnitzler, Zweig, Benjamin, Werfel, Broch, Kafka, Koestler, Canetti, Kertesz, Danilo Kis, Sienkiewicz, Pasternak, Erenburg, Agnon, Singer, Nelly Sachs, Lagerloef, Max Frisch, Romain Rolland, Proust, Maurois, Ionesco, D¡¯Annunzio, Moravia, Romain Gary, Neruda, Pinter, Gordimer, Gertrude Stein, Saul Bellow, Salinger, Norman Mailer, Irwin Shaw, Arthur Miller, Malamud, Nabokov, Brodsky, Updike, Nathaniel West, Ginsberg, Philip Roth, Eric Segal, Neil Simon, Elie Wiesel, Asimov, Styron, Irving Stone, Herman Wouk, Sheldon, Leon Uris, Cynthia Ozick, Dorothy Parker, Susan Sontag, and Erica Jong. These writers have revealed conflict of identity in their works and real life. They have the common characteristic of identity crisis and intermingled duality, and an ambivalent attitude to their environment, or reaction formation. Their internal struggles mainly include a sense inferiority in their racial roots and grandiosity as the chosen people, the painful experiences of anti-Semitism, and personal and collective difficulty to adapt as the exiled or outsiders. I believe that their sincere introspective works have a self-soothing effect, and their painful psychological journey has been fully rewarded.
